
Graphene Production Methods
Mechanical Exfoliation:
Graphene can be produced by mechanically exfoliating bulk materials such as activated carbon or ordinary graphite. This involves peeling off the upper layers of graphite using mechanical methods such as cutting or physical processing.
Chemical-Mechanical Method:
Graphene can also be fabricated using a chemical-mechanical approach. This typically involves treating carbon-containing materials such as graphite with acids or other chemicals to separate the layers, resulting in individual graphene sheets.
Chemical Reduction:
This method involves reducing organic or inorganic carbon-containing compounds to form graphene. A common example is the reduction of graphene oxide (GO), where GO is chemically reduced to produce graphene.
Epitaxial Growth:
This method involves growing and crystallizing graphene layers on suitable substrates such as silicon carbide (SiC) or nickel (Ni). Epitaxial growth enables the production of high-quality, large-area graphene.
Exfoliation Method:
Exfoliation separates graphene layers from graphite using mechanical or chemical techniques. The most well-known example is mechanical exfoliation using adhesive tape to peel away graphene layers from a graphite sheet.
These methods offer different approaches to graphene production and are selected depending on the specific application and technical requirements.
